2017 Vital MTB Test Sessions

Five years, over one hundred mountain bikes, and 4,581 miles of incredible singletrack. That's how long we've been at this Test Sessions business. Every fall, we take note of all the sickest new trail and enduro bikes being released for next year, pick up to two dozen of our favorites, then put each and every one of them through a torture test on some truly demanding trails. Sometimes bikes break and sometimes we fall in love, but every time we report our findings to you in well-informed and brutally honest reviews.

2014 Fox 34 Talas and Float X

With enduro-fluenza spreading like wild fire, I got the opportunity to check out the 2014 enduro-bred suspension from FOX at the opener of the Oregon Enduro Series in Hood River, Oregon. Accompanied by moto all-star Jeremy McGrath, a slew of Fox’s finest engineers, and top American enduro racer Lars n’ Bars Sternberg, we set out on the trails to get our fill of the amazing terrain. Although the days were socked in and gloomy, it made for an unreal mud shredfest!

Transition Klunker : Mountain Flyer

Crisp as the alpine air, freshly cracked Miller High Lifes clank together as the Klunkers gather for another rally in the mountains. The stoke is high. Someone cranks Slayer on the stereo. Then it’s off to the trails, as everyone hikes to the top of the day’s first radical line. They reminisce about past rides and crazy lines that they hope to surpass. A combination of experience and stupidity leads the Klunkers into the distance, as they attempt to get higher, go faster and whip harder. Competition and camaraderie push the riders onward.

Colorado Trail : Vital MTB

We are three mountain bikers. Some people used to know who we are, hometown heroes in the dark ages of a struggling sport as we rolled out of the start in pursuit of professional racing careers. Years of toeing the line between love and hate for a two-wheeled lifestyle that was passionately instilled in us from a young age. Uplifted by the support of people close to us, yet driven away by the politics, we embarked on a journey to ride the Colorado Trail, hoping to find new inspirations that keep the pedals turning...

Adventure Catalyst : White Rim

You know its spring in the desert when all the license plates turn green. The ultimate escape from a long, cold, and dark winter, it’s no wonder the red rocks are complimented by the blooming green plates and masses of people. Everyone seemed to be headed to the desert. Maybe we should go too? But where would we go?

Baja Divide : Outside Online

At the start of 2016, long-distance riders Nicholas Carmen and Lael Wilcox pioneered an unthinkably cool 1,700-mile mountain bike route. The ride begins in San Diego and finishes at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Dubbed the Baja Divide, the route has gained some traction among intrepid souls—including me and my friend Jordan Carr—looking to escape the grips of a cold winter.
